The Mind of a Criminal

You have probably met him. He carries himself with confidence, speaks with fluency and has an opinion on things. He is satisfied and has a perfect life. While I could be talking about anyone, our candidate carries a dark secret. He is a criminal. If anyone whispered this to you, you would express shock. You would be justified, as there would be nothing to give away the secret. His “beautiful mind” helps him camouflage well as even his close friends swear by him.

What does it take to live such a life? For one, you would have to use your intellect to resolve the inherent contradiction in your life. To the outside world, you seem like a success, but you know the truth, that in fact, you are a criminal. The ability to be a criminal and act like a regular Joe requires mental gymnastics that would tax anyone. Remember, even Matt Damon playing a psychopath gets affected by his role. Our character coasts without breaking a sweat.Next, our character needs to justify to himself why. Perhaps when he was a child, his teacher beat him and he needed to retaliate. He may have vandalised the school and pinned the blame on his friend, laughing at the consequences. Maybe he saw poverty or misfortune and vowed to achieve success at any cost.

These issues are in the past, and the ability to carry anger requires constant reinforcement. Recall this is not a proclaimed offender but probably a member of the Winston Club. He wants for nothing, and yet, it is the thrill of preying on society, the weak and the oppressed that gives him joy; the reason he continues to remain a criminal. Our scriptures tell us that we are here on earth to attain Moksh, or freedom from the cycle of birth and death. Do good deeds you are told to achieve freedom from your body. How does a criminal mind interpret the scriptures?
