Reversing Ageing

If you accept that time exists, then it seems to move only one way – forward. There does not appear to be any way to reverse that. In much the same way, you age; no reverse gear included. We have even coined monikers for this “ageing like fine wine” for example. Scientists are now discovering that perhaps there is an alternative. It has to do with the dead cells inside of you.

We already know that as you age, your cells die. These cells have stopped its core function of dividing but continue to remain dormant within you. They even secrete protein and inflammatory cytokines. The protein and cytokines, in turn, causes inflammation in your body and more rapid ageing. Known as senescent cells, they build up and result in illness such as cardiovascular disease, arthritis and diabetes.

Scientists have now found a way to kill these cells inside you. Clinical trials are underway using compounds known as senolytics to remove these cells permanently. Discovered by Peter de Keizer in Rotterdam, the treatment has been used on mice to reverse ageing. Early results have shown a regrowth of hair and a reversal of kidney damage for example. The treatment is not entirely risk-free as the compounds also seen to be targeting healthy cells. The killing of healthy cells can potentially trigger other complications yet to be discovered. So far, the trials have taken place in mice, but it is probably not far from becoming safe for human’s as well.

In a bizarre piece of news, some people were found trying to achieve the same thing by transfusing the blood of young children. I suppose some people will do anything to remain young. There is perhaps an easier time-tested way. Fasting has been proven time and time again to eliminate dead cells from your body successfully.
