Crowd Funding Cures

Cancer of the body occurs when free radicals in your body, inherently unstable begin to affect the cells around them, strangely in an effort to stabilize themselves. There are numerous laboratories around the world working on creating cancer cures. Laboratories are funded and need to focus their attention on the most promising cures and sometimes end up forgetting or simply being unable to work on potential solutions for lack of funds.

Alexanders Masters founded icancer to raise money for a potential cancer cure called AdVince. Advince is a genetically modified oncolytic adenovirus or a biological agent that can eat the cancer cells. However, the company that had created the drug had run out of money and could not take the solution all the way to the market, something that apparently happens often. Alexanders decided to take the crowd funding route to raise two million dollars to fund the research necessary to complete the process and get the necessary approvals, through icancer.

It took eight months to raise the money and Professor Essand and Dr. Lega did the rest. The notion that you can use a virus to kill cancer has been around for a while. However, scientists had not yet solved the problems of how to inject the virus without killing the patient and also ensuring that the virus lived long enough in the body to kill the cancer. Advince was administered as a self replicating virus to ensure that it lived long enough to kill the cancer.

The outcome is yet to be validated but this has set into process a new way to fund clinical trials into promising research to address a multitude of diseases that afflict humanity. If you get a chance, play your part.
